CULTURAL TRIANGLE
The Cultural Triangle is the land which lies within the three ancient cities of Dambulla, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, which bear testament to the great civilization that existed here dating back to 4 BC. On seeing the extensive ruins here, and with a little imagination it is possible to re-create the life of the proud people that once lived here and developed this region into the masterpiece of creation that it once was. The numerous irrigation tanks covering hundreds of acres, with their waters held back with manually constructed packed earth bunds are proof that the ancient Kings were exceptionally advanced for their time. The Cultural Triangle holds the distinction of housing three of the seven World Heritage Sites in the country which are Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya.
KANDY
Kandy is one of the most beautiful cities in Sri Lanka. The last king of ancient Sri Lanka ruled the island from this magnificent city before the whole country was brought under the rule of the British during the colonial era.
Among the many things to see in Kandy, the sacred Sri Dalada Maligwa, which is also known as the Temple of the Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, is prominent and is one of the most popular sites of worship among Buddhists in the island. The annual procession of the temple referred to as the ‘Esala Perahera’ during the month of August. The Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens, Gadaladeniya Viharaya, Lankatilaka Viharaya, Kandy Garrison Cemetery, Kandy Lake are a few of the popular tourist attractions in and around the city worth a visit.
NUWARA ELIYA
Drive through green valleys of the hill country pierced by endless waterfalls misty steep roads, twisting through lush green blankets of tea bushes in a cool climate, remind visitors that they are within the range of the renowned British colonial retreat, Nuwara Eliya. Situated 3,415 ft. above sea level and 200 km east of the capital of Colombo, this cosy hamlet comprises numerous floral and faunal species coupled with towering mountain ranges and scenic waterfalls.
GALLE
The south coast has the attractions of the West – some beautiful beaches, diving and snorkeling opportunities, historic and interesting sights without the crowds. There is easy access to several National Parks – Bundala, Yala- and the old town of Galle is one of the most interesting in Sri Lanka.
JAFFNA
The north coast of Sri Lanka offers its own distinctive beach experience, with offshore islands dotted around the Jaffna coast, virgin beaches fringed with Palmyra trees such as the famous shallow transparent waters of Casuarina Beach, and the wild and unforgettable sand dunes of Manalkadu.
YALA
Yala National Park is the second largest national park in Sri Lanka. Without a doubt, it is also the most popular one. Every year large numbers of tourists traverse through its dusty trails in the hopes of catching a glimpse of Sri Lankan leopards. In addition to leopards, visitors may also spot large numbers of elephants, sloth bears and deer occupy in the beautiful territories of Yala as well. The best time to visit is considered to be between the months of November to August. The park is located near the city of Hambantota and Tissamaharama.
TRINCOMALEE
The east coast consists of long white beaches, great surf and mangrove lagoons and is a sought after tourist hot spot.
PASSIKUDHA
Pasikuda is the pin up of picture postcard beaches thanks to its soft white sand and translucent water. Between May and September, this is the best place in Sri Lanka for a Lankan beach holiday. Most days are cloudless, the ocean is warm, and water clarity is very good which makes it ideal for snorkelling, diving, sailing and a host of other water sports. The curve of Pasikuda bay means that swimming can be enjoyed throughout the year. You’ll love Pasikuda Beach. Close to sedate Batticaloa and its vast lagoon, its predominantly Tamil-Hindu culture gives the region its own warm, unique and unforgettable flavour.
